Enjoy “Music You Know” Oct. 13

Mention Classical Music and many people will claim they don’t know a thing about it. The Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s Friday Favorites, Music You Know concerts set out to prove them wrong.

“Classical music is everywhere – in movies, commercials, cartoons. People may say they don’t know anything about classical music, but when the Symphony starts playing, they will recognize many of the  pieces,” said Marc Thayer, CEO of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.

The “Music You Know” concerts make orchestra music approachable to newcomers with its shorter, recognizable pieces, while providing longtime symphony fans a chance to hear some of their favorite compositions in a more intimate setting. The concerts start at 6:30 p.m. and run without intermission until approximately 8 p.m.

The Friday, Oct. 13, program at Elgin Community College’s Blizzard Theatre will include:

J. STRAUSS, Jr. Thunder and Lightning Polka

HUMPERDINCK Witch's Ride from Hansel and Gretel

ELGAR Nimrod from Enigma Variations

MOZART Don Giovanni Overture

BERLIOZ March to the Scaffold from Symphonie fantastique

RAVEL Pavane for a Dead Princess

GRIEG In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt
