BACH TO SCHOOL ENSEMBLES
2012-2013 Printable ESO EDUCATION BROCHURE
Elgin Symphony Orchestra chamber music ensembles will perform for your students right in your own school! These programs are best suited for elementary age students, but are easily and effectively tailored for an older audience. Each ensemble presents a unique 45-minute musical program which reinforces the goals for Illinois Learning Standards in the Arts. Each ensemble engagement includes two (2) back-to-back performances (weekday, during school) of the selected program within a 2.5 hour timeframe. See a detailed listing of the ensembles below.
ESQ: The Music of Hollywood
The ESO String Quartet will introduce the students to movie music old and new and discuss how
Hollywood composers use string instruments to compliment what is happening on the screen.
Some of the music performed will be from Psycho, Jaws and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Brass Quintet: Madrigals to Jazz and Everything In-Between
From the top of the piccolo trumpet to the depths of the tuba, the ESO Brass will entertain using
only their lips (along with instruments, a nifty rope trick, and music from Gabrieli to Bernstein)
to do demonstrate the evolution of music over the past 300 years.
Woodwind Quintet: Peter and the Wolf
The ESO woodwinds, consisting of a flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn, along with a
narrator present Prokofiev’s renowned classic tale Peter and the Wolf. Each instrument will
present the classic characters of the story. Peter, the cat, the duck, the bird, Grandpa, and of
course the Wolf!
Apollo Trio: An Eclectic Ensemble!
This new program developed by ESO musicians introduces elementary school students to three of
the instrument families within a symphony orchestra: strings, woodwinds, and brass. Each
musician will perform on various instruments within each family to show the similarities and
differences between them.
The Incredible Double Bass Duo
The lowest, the largest, and the most audacious of the string family, the double basses will
entertain you with low sounds. You’ll giggle, you’ll learn, you’ll say, “who knew a bass could do
that?!”
Magic of Rhythm: Percussion, Violin, and Illusions
This ensemble explores how a composer uses rhythm to create magic in our lives. It’s a
combination of melody, rhythm, and magical illusions. Accompanied by the audience’s
participation, the stage comes alive with exotic instruments from around the world, delightful
music, and fantastic magic guaranteed to amaze!
Around the World with Percussion
The ESO Percussion Ensemble spins the globe and visits countries around the world. They show
off the incredible variety of instruments that make up the percussion family and introduce
students to characteristic music of the countries they visit.
Instruments of Movement: Music and Dance
ESO musicians, in partnership with dancers from Midwest Dance Collective founded by Ellen Werksman, will explore Movement and Music in this innovative new project. Exciting visuals and a wide range of musical styles will be presented.
Dancer, teacher, choreographer and native of Barrington, Ellen Werksman has produced outstanding performances, workshops, scholarship presentations and community events for over 25 years. Ms. Werksman has been recognized in publications, television, and as a “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” for the past four years for her dedication and outstanding commitment to the art of dance. Midwest Dance Collective was founded in 1998 on the premise of allowing dancers the opportunity to share the gift of their talent and passion for their art with other performers, artists other than dancers and audiences from diverse backgrounds. The company also focuses on the collaborative productions and outreach programs, charity events and communities that have the need for exposure to the art of dance.
